About the project

Daedalus brings custom DNS servers and local resolution rules to Android without requiring root access. It uses the system VPN interface to handle domain queries, letting users choose a resolver and customize its results through local rules. The original project also supports use over mobile data.

The application addresses DNS configuration on a phone: changing resolvers, checking their responses, and applying custom Hosts rules from one place. Its VPN tunnel is a mechanism for handling DNS requests; it should not be understood as a full-device proxy with a remote network exit.

  1. Custom DNS

Configure DNS servers and check their responses with the built-in tester.

  2. DNS query methods

Supports UDP, TCP, DNS over TLS, and DNS over HTTPS.

  3. Local resolution rules

Use custom Hosts and DNSMasq configurations with IPv6 support.

Choose how queries are resolved

The documentation lists UDP, TCP, DNS over TLS, and DNS over HTTPS, alongside a DNS server tester. Users can configure a resolver and then inspect its responses. Support for a protocol does not establish that a particular server is currently reachable; that depends on the network and the server configuration.

Keep resolution rules on the device

Custom Hosts and DNSMasq configurations let local rules shape DNS results, including IPv6 responses. Compare lookups before and after applying a rule to check that the intended domain resolves as expected.

Versions and getting started

Read the configuration documentation, then choose a release on GitHub Releases. The historical minimum is Android 5.0, with Android 7.1 or later recommended for launcher shortcuts. These are the original documented requirements, not confirmation of compatibility with current Android versions. When reproducing an older setup, check its rule sources and DNS servers again as well.
